Their work may have taken them underground in London building the capital’s transport infrastructure, to sewerage, water supply and other utilities projects across the UK, or perhaps overseas to construct tunnels for road, mass transit or hydroelectric schemes. Expertise may include earth-pressure balance tunnelling, tunnelling under compressed air, pipe-jacking or the so-called New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). They range from national and international firms of consulting engineers, through major transport and infrastructure organisations to contractors and specialist equipment suppliers supplying tunnel boring machines, tunnel linings and other specialist equipment and materials.
