A Commercial Manager or Managing Quantity Surveyor is required to lead and manage the locally based Quantity Surveying team responsible for providing main contracting Civil Engineering & Building solutions across a variety of sectors.

The Managing Quantity Surveyor will take responsibility for a portfolio of projects and you will manage the whole commercial process from tender through to final account, reporting to the commercial manager who leads the sector.

Duties and responsibilities include:

Assess risk and opportunities within projects, with the financial stability of the business being the priority focus.

Convey the financial principles of the business to staff and to compile and present commercial reports to the directors on a regular basis.

Facilitate good working relationships with our supply chain partners so that they provide the necessary support to remain competitive in seeking future work.

Understand, develop, convey, implement and compliance monitoring of company ethos and sustainable best practice.

Monthly Stream P&L/Forecast reporting to Regional Commercial Director. Sustainable profit maximisation, i.e. increased value and/or reduced cost.

Sustainable cash flow maximisation, i.e. reduced debtor days and/or controlled subcontract days.

Contract Documentation review - material risk and opportunity identification. Risk and Opportunity mitigation/maximisation plan, implementation, guidance and success monitoring.

Design consideration and Value Engineering. Subcontract procurement - planning, targets, procedure, and documentation, sign off and post contract management. Coordination of business wide subcontract resource requirements and use.

Direct Labour - Plan, implementation, guidance and success monitoring of tracker & bonus systems.

Plant and Materials - implementation, guidance and success monitoring of plant & material usage efficiency.

Programme/progress monitoring - delay/disruption and loss/expense identification, reporting and notification.

Project specific supply chain relationship and customer relationship satisfaction.

Monthly forecast and subcontract liability production to standard and to timetable.

The key tasks of this role include:

Effective contribution to the maximisation of financial return on projects.

The identification of commercial business risk and developing solutions for its minimisation.

The review and negotiation of terms and conditions of contract and subcontract.

Monitoring Business Unit Costs within budgetary constraints.

Accurately defining the commercial parameters of contracts. Ensuring a good level of Cash flow is maintained within the Business Unit.

The provision of commercial support and guidance to the Business Unit Management Team.

Commercial and Contractual support to the estimating and bidding process.

Contributing to the commercial requirements of pre-qualification and tender documents.

Ensuring the adoption of a best practice and continuous improvement approach to all commercial processes and procedures.

Being a visible commercial point of contact for client senior management and responding accordingly to problems

Experience Required

The ideal Candidate will be will be able to demonstrate a consistent career and will have considerable experience in the Commercial Management of Civil Engineering or Building projects with a particular emphasis on main contracting schemes.

Candidates must be degree qualified and would ideally have chartered status Candidates with prior experience.

Proven leadership of a Quantity Surveying team is preferred however experienced Senior Quantity Surveyors who are looking to advance their careers into Management positions are invited to apply.

Technical ability should include an understanding of contractual law, commercial reporting, tender procedures, commercial awareness, leadership skills, presentation skills and report writing.

Previous experience of extracting the relevant information from Site, QS and Estimating teams to determine current and future financial project contribution.

Understanding client work programmes would be helpful and examples how you can secure work through strong relationships would be of benefit. Experience of Microsoft IT packages
