We are currently looking for an approachable and committed Assistant Engineer to join our team to undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Undertake significant elements of the detailed design; e.g. calculations, drawings, sketches, reports etc, to achieve the optimum solution for the project.
  • To support the design team in the development of designs, working within the project teams and on own initiative as directed by project leads.
  • To work in both supervised and unsupervised environments, taking personal responsibility to ensure the technical content of all work carried out is correct and in accordance with agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Provide technical guidance, support and training to colleagues and assist, where practicable, in mentoring and development of others.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in full compliance with the Company’s Integrated Management System, and current H&S legislation requirements.

To be a successful applicant the following are required: 


We require someone who has a genuine interest in roads infrastructure and demonstrate pride in their work, through accurate timely delivery, they should have good problem solving/contingency planning skills with the ability to find creative and practical solutions, they should be able to communicate in a fluent and positive manner with other team members and to produce design documents in clear English.

Experience of working with Highways England and / or Local Authorities is essential for this position and you must be conversant with relevant design standards particularly the UK Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCDHW) and / or Local Authority (LA) Design Guides.

You will be able to work using your own initiative, with appropriate supervision and have good working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office in particular Excel.

Knowledge and some experience of at least one of the following civil engineering design principle including:

  • Highway Drainage Design including use of Micro Drainage.
  • Alignment Design including use of Bentley MX and / or Open Roads.
  • General Highway Design including use of ARCADY, PICADY and Auto Track.
  • Signing & Lining including use of Key Signs.


It would be preferred if you have experience in S278/ S38 infrastructure works.

Professional Qualifications and memberships required

To be succesful in this role you will possess a BSc, BEng in civil engineering or an equivalent discipline preferred, HND, HNC will also be considered depending on experience. You will also be a graduate member of ICE / CIHT and should be working towards professional qualification application for IEng.
