Diwali, the "Festival of Lights," is one of the most important events on the Hindu calendar and is celebrated by millions of people around the world, particularly in India and countries with significant Indian diaspora populations. The annual festival tends to fall between October and November, but the exact date for this year is Thursday the 31st of October.
Here at Coyle Personnel, we're excited to celebrate this vibrant festival with both our clients and candidates, as well as our own employees. We have encouraged our colleagues to share stories about their Diwali traditions, learn about the cultural significance of the festival, and enjoy Diwali-themed treats in the office.
Diwali symbolises the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It's a time for families and friends to come together, exchange gifts, light diyas (oil lamps), and enjoy delicious sweets and savoury snacks.
The word ‘Diwali’ comes from the Sanskrit ‘dīpāvali’ meaning 'row or series of lights'. The five-day celebration is observed every year in the second half of October and/or first half of November, coinciding with a new moon as per the Hindu lunisolar calendar.
In the lead-up to Diwali, homes and workplaces are cleaned, renovated, and adorned with vibrant rangolis and illuminated by diyas (oil lamps). During the festival, people dress in their finest attire, and homes are transformed into dazzling displays of light with diyas and rangolis.
Devotees honour Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, through worship ceremonies. The night sky is lit up with fireworks, and families gather for festive feasts, sharing delicious mithai (sweets) and exchanging gifts.
Many celebrants also draw traditional designs like rangoli - made using colourful powders - outside their doors to welcome luck and positivity.
Coyle Personnel are making a conscious effort to recognise and celebrate both religious and cultural festivals in the workplace. By celebrating together, onsite or remotely, we can increase every employee’s sense of belonging and engagement, uniting different cultures at work.
As an organisation, we regularly send out company-wide messages to inform and educate employees on upcoming religious festivities. We actively encourage people to learn about the purpose of a specific holiday, how they can get involved and where they can share their experiences.
From everyone at Coyle Personnel, we wish everyone who is celebrating a joyous and prosperous Diwali filled with light, love, and good fortune.
