Job Description

🚨 Signal Sighting Committee Chairperson – Rail Signalling

We’re looking for an experienced Signal Sighting Committee (SSC) Chairperson to lead signal sighting activities across rail projects, making sure everything is safe, compliant, and fit for operation.

This is a specialist role where you’ll be leading the full signal sighting process — from early design through to final approval — working closely with project teams, operators, and Network Rail stakeholders.

πŸ’Ό Role: Signal Sighting Committee Chairperson
πŸ“ Location: UK (site and office-based, travel required)
πŸ“… Type: Contract / Permanent (depending on project)

What you’ll be doing:

  • Chairing Signal Sighting Committee meetings and leading technical discussions

  • Bringing together stakeholders across Network Rail, TOCs, FOCs and project teams

  • Making sure all decisions are clear, structured and properly evidenced

  • Overseeing the preparation and approval of Signal Sighting Forms (SSFs)

  • Leading on-site signal sighting activities to assess visibility and driver view

  • Reviewing sighting assessments, including vision plots and digital tools (e.g. AVIR)

  • Making sure all work meets GE/RT8037 and wider signalling standards

  • Identifying risks related to signal visibility, environment, and operational complexity

  • Ensuring human factors (reading time, clarity, driver workload) are properly considered

  • Signing off final sighting decisions in line with industry requirements

What we’re looking for:

  • Network Rail approved SSC Chairperson competence (essential)

  • Strong understanding of UK signalling principles and lineside equipment

  • Experience leading technical forums or committees in a rail environment

  • Good working knowledge of GE/RT8037 and related standards

  • Awareness of human factors in signalling design and decision making

Nice to have:

  • Experience using tools like AVIR or vision plotting software

  • Background in resignalling or major infrastructure upgrades

  • Experience producing or reviewing Signal Sighting Forms

This is a key role in ensuring signals are positioned and validated correctly — ultimately helping drivers interpret information clearly and keeping the railway running safely.
